16 tuổi, một cô gái bỗng nhiên phát hiện ra cuộc sống vừa chuyển sang một chương hoàn toàn khác lạ. Cô ấy vẫn gặp gỡ những người quen cũ, vẫn đi lại vui chơi trong các khung cảnh mà cô đã thuộc lòng từ khi còn nhỏ.

Thế nhưng thế giới trong mắt cô đang biến hình, đầy ắp các bí mật cần được khám phá, hứa hẹn những niềm vui rực rỡ mà nhất định cô phải chờ đợi. Và tất nhiên, trong những điều mới mẻ ấy, không thể thiếu tình yêu. Belly – nhân vật chính của Mùa Hè Thiên Đường chính là một cô gái như thế.

Đặc biệt hơn, những phát hiện ấy của Belly xảy ra vào đợt nghỉ Hè. Đó là mùa Hè mà Belly không bao giờ có thể quên, khi mọi thứ mới chỉ bắt đầu. Đó là mùa Hè Belly trở nên xinh đẹp. Bởi vì lần đầu tiên trong đời cô thực sự cảm nhận được điều đó.

Cho tới trước mùa Hè ấy, Belly vẫn thầm mong rằng cuộc đời cô rồi sẽ khác. Thật tuyệt khi mọi thứ cuối cùng cũng đã thay đổi. Và Belly cũng đã thay đổi.

Mùa Hè Thiên Đường mở ra gần gũi và thật tự nhiên trong khung cảnh khu nhà nghỉ trên bãi biển Cousins. Nơi đây, Belly và ông anh trai khó ưa Steven gặp lại hai anh em nhà Fisher. Bốn con người ấy đã lớn lên cùng nhau từ các mùa Hè năm trước, chơi đùa nghịch ngợm các trò của lũ trẻ con.

Nhưng giờ đây, tất cả đều đã khác, vì xúc cảm trong Belly cũng đã khác. Hãy xem cách Belly "phân tích" lại anh bạn Conrad lớn hơn cô 1 tuổi rưỡi, người mà cô quyết định chọn làm hình mẫu để mơ về: Anh ấy có làn da rám nắng khỏe khoắn. Khóe miệng hơi nhếch lên đầy vẻ thách thức, nhưng cũng không kém phần lôi cuốn, khiến tôi lần nào gặp cũng không thể rời mắt khỏi nó. Tôi đã không biết bao lần ao ước được đặt lên đó một nụ hôn thật dài để "quét sạch" cái vẻ lạnh lùng, bất cần đó của anh. Hay nói đúng hơn là kiểm soát và chế ngự được nó. Biến nó thành của riêng mình. Và đó cũng chính là điều tôi muốn làm với anh Conrad. Biến anh thành của riêng tôi! Nhưng với Jeremiah, cậu em của nhà Fisher thì khác hẳn: Cậu ấy là bạn thân của tôi, luôn đối xử rất tốt với tôi. Anh chàng này chẳng bao giờ biết ngượng. Jeremiah luôn biết phải làm gì để tận hưởng cuộc sống một cách thoải mái nhất, tự do nhất, nên cậu ấy cũng chẳng có thời gian để mà ngượng với ngùng.

"Belly, xem vết sẹo mới nhất của mình này" – nói rồi cậu ấy hồn nhiên tốc áo lên khoe chiến tích. Jeremiah chơi bóng bầu dục. Cậu ấy luôn tự hào với các vết sẹo của mình.

Được sống giữa những anh chàng hiếu động, Belly quan sát mình và thế giới quanh mình đang lớn lên, ở những chi tiết rất nhỏ nhất, bất ngờ và ngộ nghĩnh. Chẳng hạn trước kia mỗi khi bọn con trai tắm xong, nhà tắm không khác gì bãi chiến trường với nước và xà phòng bắn tung tóe khắp nơi.

Còn bây giờ thì các anh chàng đã bắt đầu cạo râu nên bồn rửa mặt luôn vung vãi những sợi râu lún phún, còn trên mặt bồn rửa xếp kín các loại nước hoa, lăn khử mùi và kem cạo râu khác nhau…

Nhưng đáng kể nhất vẫn là những xúc cảm của Belly hướng đến các chàng trai hiện diện quanh mình. Cô thầm để ý anh Conrad chững chạc. Cô yêu những đĩa nhạc mà anh nghe. Cô lo lắng và ngấm ngầm khó chịu khi các cô gái khác thu hút sự chú ý của Conrad.

Rồi cũng ở khu nhà nghỉ trên bãi biển, Belly tình cờ gặp gỡ Cam, một chàng trai tinh tế, đầy thông hiểu và dành cho cô tình cảm đặc biệt. Nhưng với Cam, dường như cô chỉ muốn duy trì một tình bạn đơn thuần.

Còn cậu em Jeremiah thì thế nào? Cái anh chàng vô tư và trẻ con đến "phát sợ" ấy không hiểu sao luôn sẵn lòng ở bên Belly trong các tình huống trớ trêu nhất, dạy cô lái xe, ủng hộ cô trở thành cô gái tự tin và biết mình muốn gì…

Trái tim Belly thuộc về ai? Ai mới là BF thực sự của cô bạn đáng yêu? Bạn sẽ vô cùng thú vị khi khám phá hành trình tâm lý ấy trong Mùa Hè Thiên Đường. Thế nhưng không phải tất cả mọi thứ đều được tô màu hồng trong mùa Hè 16 tuổi.

Những bài học thực tế buồn bã mà Belly đối diện đã làm cho cô gái nhỏ đằm hơn, sâu sắc hơn. Đó là cách Belly ứng xử với việc ly dị của bố mẹ mình và bố mẹ anh em nhà Fisher, là sự cảm thông với bệnh ung thư của cô Susannah. Khi vui và buồn đan xen, một cô gái như Belly càng hiểu rõ giá trị những điều hạnh phúc mà cuộc sống dành tặng cho mình.

Mùa Hè Thiên Đường có một kết cấu thông minh: Những chương của hiện tại và quá khứ đan xen, đem lại hiệu ứng đối chiếu, so sánh giữa "hôm nay ta lớn" với "khi xưa ta bé" đầy bất ngờ thú vị.

Được dẫn dắt theo góc nhìn và lời kể của Belly, câu chuyện mở ra thật trong sáng, hóm hỉnh và lôi cuốn đến mức bạn sẽ khó lòng dừng lại lúc đã bắt vào trang sách đầu tiên. Và bạn sẽ phải nóng lòng chờ đợi những tập tiếp theo, sau khi đã "nghiền ngấu" hết tập 1 này.

In the Stanford Law Review Online (there's a shorter version in TNR), he writes: 'The right to be forgotten could make Facebook and Google, for example, liable for up to two percent of their global income if they fail to remove photos that people post about themselves and later regret, even if the photos have been widely distributed already. Unless the right is defined more precisely when it is promulgated over the next year or so, it could precipitate a dramatic clash between European and American conceptions of the proper balance between privacy and free speech, leading to a far less open Internet.' According to Rosen, the 'right' goes farther than previously thought, treating 'takedown requests for truthful information posted by others identically to takedown requests for photos I've posted myself that have then been copied by others: both are included in the definition of personal data as "any information relating" to me, regardless of its source.' Examples of previous attempts this might bolster include 'efforts by two Germans convicted of murdering a famous actor to remove their criminal history from the actor's Wikipedia page' and an 'Argentine pop star [who] had posed for racy pictures when she was young, but recently sued Google and Yahoo to take them down.'"

After their trips, even the office printer and a thermostat in one of the chamber's corporate offices were communicating with an internet address in China. The chamber did not disclose how hackers had infiltrated its systems, but its first step after the attack was to bar employees from taking devices with them 'to certain countries,' notably China. 'Everybody knows that if you are doing business in China, in the 21st century, you don't bring anything with you,' says Jacob Olcott, a cybersecurity expert at Good Harbor Consulting. 'That's "Business 101" — at least it should be.'"

His argument against a 'cinematic narrative' was probably strongest with his comparison to the movie Saving Private Ryan, where Spielberg made the Normandy Beach invasion scene as close to a documentary as possible. The audience could sit back and appreciate that. But if you made a game where the player is in that position of the soldier then that historically accurate imagery and top shelf voice acting doesn't really matter, the only thing the player should be thinking is 'How the **** do I get to that rock? How do I get to the exit?' Is Jaffe right? Have game makers been 'seduced by the power and language of film' at the expense of gameplay?"

'The gist of much of Microsoft's advice is that a user's relationship with computer software is a unique one, and it's important to craft the language of software UIs accordingly,' McAllister writes. 'Occasionally, Microsoft's recommendations verge on the absurd. In it, he refers to technology pundits as 'bizarro' and argues that it's a misconception that patents stifle innovation. As he writes, 'What I do not understand is — had the jury determined Eolas's patents valid — why it would be A-OK for dozens of already megarich corporations to get even richer adopting technology they did not invent or have legal permission to use, but somehow immoral for the actual creators of the technology to likewise profit[?]"" I am not a patent lawyer, but I doubt I'm the only one who thinks it's possible to support a patent on an industrial potash processing technique, but not software patents — or at least to distinguish them from each other.

Hugh Pickens writes "Daniel Berniger writes that one of the unexpected consequences of AT&T's transition to HD voice and all-IP networks is that the footprint of required network equipment will shrink by as much as 90 percent, translating into a $100 billion windfall as the global telecom giant starts emptying buildings and selling off the resulting real estate surplus. Since IP connections utilize logical address assignments, a single fiber can support an almost arbitrary number of end-user connections — so half a rack of VoIP network equipment replaces a room full of Class 4 and Class 5 circuit switching equipment, and equipment sheds replace the contents of entire buildings. AT&T's portfolio goes back more than 100 years, even as commercial real estate appreciated five fold since the 1970s, so growth of telephone service during the 20th century leaves the company with 250 million sq ft of floor space real estate in prime locations across America. 'The scale of the real estate divestiture challenge may justify creating a separate business unit to deal with the all-IP network transition,' writes Berniger, who adds that ATT isn't the only one who will benefit. 'The transition to all-IP networks allows carriers to sell-off a vast majority of the 100,000 or so central offices (PDF) currently occupying prime real estate around the globe.'"

New submitter davidstites writes "I am a masters computer science student at University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, and in November I performed a security audit of 230+ popular iOS applications because I wanted to know how secure apps on smartphones and tablets really are. I made a shocking discovery. The largest single potential security breach was with the Southwest Airlines application. Southwest Airlines' iPhone app leaves a user's information vulnerable to hackers. When you login to the application on your phone using your Rapid Rewards account, the app submits your username and password information as plain-text (unencrypted) to a Southwest remote server (mobile.southwest.com). A potential attacker can simply sniff for the data on the network and steal it. This situation is a hackers dream! If a victims credentials were captured, a hacker could use those credentials to login to that particular account and they would have access to anything the victim would have access to, such as addresses, birthdays, e-mail, phone and credit cards. Said tweet sparked outrage in Saudi Arabia and resulted in multiple death threats. Kashgari faces the death penalty in Saudi Arabia."

'The cameras have been instrumental in changing driver behavior. The U.S. Department of Justice said Thomas Richardson used his inside knowledge of IRS operations to commit his crime, which was pretty audacious. According to the DOJ, Richardson admitted that within a two-day period, April 15 to April 17, 2006, he filed or caused to be filed 29 fraudulent 2005 individual income tax returns totaling $7,922,657."

In theory, their invention could be far more energy efficient than thermal desalination or reverse osmosis. This would cut the cost of using salt water for drinking or irrigation. It could also be used to make compact desalination systems for boats and life rafts, or crops. Each battery is made with manganese oxide nanorod electrodes, which absorb sodium when an electrical current passes through them. When the current is reversed, they dump the sodium ions out into waste water."

The project has 17 pilot sites in sub-Saharan Africa to-date, providing prepaid energy services to over 3000 people who did not have access to electricity — a fraction of the over 1.3 Billion worldwide. The lab has been developing custom software applications to integrate off-the-shelf hardware components, and also provide the operational and management mechanisms needed. Communications with the sites are over the mobile networks. Consumers can recharge their accounts using either cellphones, or visit a designated local vendor who can do it at the site using an Android app. Software residing locally makes each site autonomous, and the online platform allows for remote visibility, localized consumer interactions and integration with payment solutions. And we're planning on deploying soon in Haiti and Kenya."

There's a lot of good stuff in there, but one point is particularly troubling. Quoting Sinofsky: 'WOA does not support running, emulating, or porting existing x86/64 desktop apps. Code that uses only system or OS services from WinRT can be used within an app and distributed through the Windows Store for both WOA and x86/64. Consumers obtain all [WOA] software, including device drivers, through the Windows Store and Microsoft Update or Windows Update.' It's hard to under-emphasize just how huge a change that is. It's one thing to say that ARM CPUs won't support x86 emulation; something else entirely to split software delivery and installation. Up until now, one of the biggest differences between desktop and mobile operating systems has been the ability to install software. It's true that Microsoft's decision to wall off unapproved software installation is similar to the approach of Android and iOS — but iOS isn't the same thing as OS X. Combining both of these decisions under the 'Windows' brand could be disastrous, not because Microsoft is evil, but because it creates two entirely different user experiences on the basis of which ISA your CPU supports."     </div>

Comments Hugh Pickens writes "The Hollywood Reporter reports that members of the iconic disco-era musical group Sister Sledge have filed a major class action lawsuit against Warner Music Group claiming that the music giant's method for calculating digital music purchases as 'sales' rather than 'licenses' has cheated them out of millions of dollars from digital music sales. Songwriters typically make much less money when an album is 'sold' than they do when their music is 'licensed' (the rationale derives from the costs that used to be associated with the physical production of records) but record labels have taken the position that music sold via such digital stores as iTunes should be counted as 'sales' rather than licenses. The difference in revenue can be significant as Sister Sledge claim their record deal promises 25 percent of revenue from licenses but only 5-1/2% to 6-1/2% of net from sales. Eminem's publisher brought a nearly identical claim against Universal Music Group and won an important decision at the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in 2010 when the 9th Circuit ruled that iTunes' contract unambiguously provided that the music was licensed. The lawsuit argued that record companies' arrangements with digital retailers resembled a license more than it did a sale of a CD or record because, among other reasons, the labels furnished the seller with a single master recording that it then duplicated for customers. 'Unlike physical sales, where the record company manufactures each disc and has incremental costs, when they license to iTunes, all they do is turn over one master,' says attorney Richard S. Busch. 'It's only fair that the artist should receive 50 percent of the receipts.'"     </div>

Miller writes that when Facebook goes public later this year, Mark Zuckerberg plans to exercise stock options worth $5 billion of the $28 billion that his ownership stake will be worth and since the $5 billion he will receive will be treated as salary, Zuckerberg will have a tax bill of more than $2 billion making him, quite possibly, the largest taxpayer in history. But how much income tax will Zuckerberg pay on the rest of his stock that he won't immediately sell? Nothing, nada, zilch. He can simply use his stock as collateral to borrow against his tremendous wealth and avoid all tax. That's what Lawrence J. Ellison, the chief executive of Oracle, did, reportedly borrowing more than a billion dollars against his Oracle shares to buy one of the most expensive yachts in the world. Or consider the case of Steven P. Jobs who never sold a single share of Apple after he rejoined the company in 1997, and therefore never paying a penny of tax on the over $2 billion of Apple stock he held at his death. Now Jobs' widow can sell those shares without paying any income tax on the appreciation before his death — only on the increase in value from the time of his death to the time of the sale — because our tax system is based on the concept of "realization." Individuals are not taxed until they actually sell property and realize their gains and the solution to the problem is called mark-to-market taxation. According to Miller, mark-to-market would only affect individuals who were undeniably, extraordinarily rich, only publicly traded stock would be marked to market, and a mark-to-market system of taxation on the top one-tenth of 1 percent would raise hundreds of billions of dollars of new revenue over the next 10 years."

US Approves Two New Nuclear Reactors - 549 Comments

These are the first licenses to be issued since the Three Mile Island incident in 1979. The pair of facilities will cost $14 billion and produce 2.2 GW of power (able to power ~1 million homes). They will be Westinghouse AP1000 designs, which are the newest reactors approved by the NRC. These models passively cool their fuel rods using condensation and gravity, rather than electricity, preventing the possibility of another Fukushima Daiichi-type meltdown due to loss of power to cooling water pumps." Adds Unknown Lamer: "Expected to begin operation in 2016 or 2017, the pair of new AP1000 reactors will produce around 2GW of power for the southeast. This is the first of the new combined construction and operating licenses ever issued by the NRC; hopefully this bodes well for the many other pending applications."

Future generations may know little of the days when buying a movie meant you owned it even if the Internet went down and when getting a movie meant you had to scour aisles of boxes in search of one whose cover art called back a story that echoed your interests. Josh Johnson, one of the filmmakers behind the upcoming documentary 'Rewind This!' hopes to tell the story of how and why home video came about, and how it changed our culture giving B movies and films that didn't make the silver screen their own chance to shine. 'Essentially, the rental market expanded, because of voracious consumer demand, into non-blockbuster, off-Hollywood video content which would never have had a theatrical life otherwise,' says Palmer. While researching the documentary Palmer found something interesting: there is a resurgence taking place of people going back to VHS because a massive number of films are 'trapped on VHS' with 30 and 40 percent of films released on VHS never to be seen again on any other format. 'Most of the true VHS fanatics are children of the 1980s,' says Palmer. 'Whether they are motivated by a sense of nostalgia or prefer the format for the grainy aesthetic qualities of magnetic tape or some other reason entirely unknown, each tapehead is unique like a snowflake.'"

With rumors last year that a MacBook Air running on ARM could appear by 2013, could he be part of a team making that happen? Apple Could Lose $1.6 Billion In iPad Lawsuit - 259 Comments
redletterdave writes "Proview Technology, which currently uses the 'iPad' name on several of its products including computer monitors, stands to win up to $1.6 billion and an apology from Apple for allegedly infringing upon Proview's trademarked name to use on its bestselling tablet. Proview International, which owns subsidiaries Proview Technology in Shenzhen and Proview Electronics in Taiwan, originally registered the name 'iPad' in Taiwan in 2000 and mainland China in 2001. Proview eventually sued Apple in 2011, and even though the Cupertino-based company retaliated with a counter-suit of its own, Apple lost the case in local Chinese courts. Depending on the court's findings, Apple could be fined anywhere from $38 million to the $1.6 billion that Proview is seeking. In addition to the money, Proview also wants Apple to apologize. 'We have prepared well for a long-term legal battle,' said one of Proview's lawyers."

A statement in the House of Lords explained the reasoning: 'A posthumous pardon was not considered appropriate as Alan Turing was properly convicted of what at the time was a criminal offence. He would have known that his offence was against the law and that he would be prosecuted. It is tragic that Alan Turing was convicted of an offence which now seems both cruel and absurd-particularly poignant given his outstanding contribution to the war effort. However, the law at the time required a prosecution and, as such, long-standing policy has been to accept that such convictions took place and, rather than trying to alter the historical context and to put right what cannot be put right, ensure instead that we never again return to those times.'"

Linley Gwennap of the Linley Group cracked one of the secrets of the new iPhone's A5 chip after working out that it packs some serious audio cleaning power not available on the iPhone 4's A4 chip. Audience has developed technology that removes most or all of the background noise when someone places a cell-phone call from a restaurant, airport, or other noisy location. The iPhone 4S integrates Audience's 'EarSmart' technology directly into the A5 processor, improving its technology to handle 'far-field speech,' which means holding the device at arm's length rather than directly in front of the mouth. Apple has also licensed the Audience technology for a 'new generation of processor IP,' which may mean that the forthcoming A6 processor will appear in the iPad 3 and iPhone 5. 'Why Apple has not simply purchased Audience is unclear. An acquisition would prevent Audience's other major customer, Samsung, from using the technology to compete with Apple,' says Gwennap. 'The company may be hedging its bets, as it could switch to Qualcomm's Fluence noise-reduction technology in the future.'"

Trong tập cuối này, cuối cùng, độc giả cũng đọc được những gì thực sự diễn ra trong tâm trí của chàng trai bí ẩn: Conrad. Đây là nhân vật luôn khiến người khác thấy khó hiểu và chẳng ai biết anh muốn gì. Bây giờ thì chúng ta sẽ biết được cảm giác của Conrad và lý do của anh ấy – và tất cả đều trở nên dễ hiểu. Nó gần như là cơ hội để đọc được ý nghĩ của Edward (Chạng Vạng) trong tập sách "Midnight Sun" – nếu tác giả xuất bản cuốn sách này. Việc Jenny Han giữ những "bí mật" đó đến tập cuối cùng, có lẽ là để hai tập đầu được "nhẹ nhàng" và dễ đọc hơn.
